Dolphins Stock Report: Minkah Fitzpatrick showcases ball skills
The Miami Dolphins touchdown and interception shutout came to an end Saturday as the team held their first practice in front of fans.
Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick hawked down a Zach Wilson pass, plucking it out the air for an interception, and rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. picked off a Quinn Ewers pass, and would have returned it for a pick-6 if the action were live.
But that wouldn’t have been the only score considering Monaray Baldwin would have scored on a deep pass from Ewers. It’s possible that Tyreek Hill would have scored on a deep pass from Tua Tagovailoa, but that wasn’t clearcut.
Here’s a breakdown of what else happened in Day 4 of training camp.
TOP PERFORMERS
Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick: The recently acquired free safety showcased the ballhawk skills that have allowed him to pull down 20 interceptions in six seasons, putting on the afterburners to get from the line of scrimmage to the middle of the field, where he plucked a pass from Zach Wilson out the air on a pass intended for Tahj Washington.
Inside linebacker Jordyn Brooks: The Dolphins starting inside linebacker is triggering fast, and makes a bunch of tackles at, or behind the line of scrimmage every day. He’s weaving in and out of traffic in the trenches to hunt down running plays consistently.
Receiver Dee Eskridge: One backend of the roster receiver typically becomes the weapon the backup quarterbacks lean on each camp and Eskridge, a 2021 second-round pick the Dolphins found on the waiver wire and developed all of last season, seems to be that player this camp. Eskridge has made a chunky reception the past three days.
STOCK UP
Jason Marshall Jr. is a rookie paying his dues in a Dolphins secondary auditioning for starters, but the University of Florida standout the Dolphins selected in the fifth round had his best moment of training camp when he pulled down a Quinn Ewers pass along the boundary and got it up and potentially could have run it back for a pick-six.
STOCK DOWN
Cam Smith, the Dolphins’ 2023 second-round pick, continues to be leapfrogged the the depth chart by players who barely know the defensive calls. He got beat by undrafted rookie receiver Monaray Baldwin on a long run-after catch touchdown pass from Quinn Ewers, and it looked like Smith gave up on the play because he stopped running. We’ve officially reached the point in his development where we can no longer blame Smith’s struggles on inexperience. At this point there would be better odds he’s cut than of Smith becoming a week one starter.
INJURY UPDATE
Kader Kohou, the Dolphins’ most experienced cornerback, injured his right leg covering Tyreek Hill during an early 1-on-1 period, and never returned to practice.
James Daniels, who is expected to be one of Miami’s starting guards, finished his first practice of the week on Saturday. Daniels, who is recovering from an Achilles injury he suffered last September, had been held out of 11-on-11 periods earlier this week, but worked to the final snap in the final practice of the week.
Center Aaron Brewer continues to be sidelined by a right leg injury that coach Mike McDaniel said is precautionary.
Cornerback B.J. Adams left the field walking with a wobble 30 minutes before the session wrapped up.
WHAT THEY SAID
“There are so many young guys coming in. I asked one of them when they graduated [high school] and I was already in my rookie year. It was a surreal moment,” Jaylen Waddle on the fact Miami’s building a younger team.
