Inter Miami signs Swedish-American McVey, close to deals with Campana, Rodriguez, Lowe

Inter Miami continued to restock its back line Friday with the addition of center back Christopher McVey from Swedish club IF Elfsborg.

McVey’s contract runs through 2024 with an option for 2025. The 24-year-old Swedish-American can also play as a fullback. He is awaiting his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and can then join training camp, which begins Monday.

“Christopher is a promising addition at a position of need for us, and we’re excited to have him join Inter Miami,” said chief soccer officer Chris Henderson. “He’s a versatile defender with good size who can fill in at a number of positions effectively. He also holds a U.S. passport, so he won’t occupy an international roster slot, which will allow us to have flexibility as we continue to build a competitive roster for the 2022 MLS season.”

The team is also expected to sign Jamaican national team defender Damion Lowe, Colombian winger Emerson Rodriguez and Ecuadorean national team forward Leonardo Campana in the next week, according to sources. Lowe played for the Seattle Sounders from 2014-16 and played in Egypt last season. Rodriguez, who plays for Colombian club Millonarios, is known for his speed. Campana is a 6-3 center forward who spent last season on loan with Swiss club Grasshopper from English Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers. Both are 21 years old.

McVey has played his entire career in Sweden, starting at age 12 with IF Elfsborg’s youth teams. He played five UEFA Youth League games for the U-19 team and made his first-team debut in October 2017.

The Sparsör, Sweden native of American descent made a total of 42 appearances for Elfsborg between 2017 and 2021. He played in five UEFA Conference League qualifying matches in the 2021-2022 campaign with one goal and one assist. McVey also played for Sweden’s U-17 and U-18 teams.
