FIU Sports and Fitness grad earns scholarship from Delta Psi Kappa Student Athletic Awards
Shereen Taljebini certainly enjoys watching sports, particularly tennis, basketball and the NFL.
However, there is one thing that particular gets her attention while viewing. That is when the trainers and medical personnel come on the field.
“As a youngster, I always paid extra attention to that and asked what they were doing to help them,” Taljebini said.
At age 21, Taljebini has always been interested in the development of a healthy body, including helping the body recover from injuries. For that reason, she has spent four years of her college life studying in the Sports and Fitness program at FIU and is now heading into a three-year graduate program.
She will have some help in completing that program, as she was named the winner of a $1,000 scholarship by the Delta Psi Kappa Student Athletic Awards that honors the top female high school athletes and students in Miami-Dade. In addition to Taljebini, 38 female high school athletes were honored.
“I pretty much at this point know every bone and muscle in the human body,” said Taljebini, who grew up in Miami.
She has put that knowledge to work working as a personal trainer at the Body & Soul gym in Coconut Grove and also delving into physical therapy and cross-fit training.
“It all comes down to helping people improve their lifestyle,” Taljebini said. “I’m affecting their lives. Sports, physical therapy, personal training and cross-fit are all part of a circle that interlocks for me. It’s a big umbrella.”
As for her own fitness? “Yes, I get up at 5 a.m. every morning to train myself,” she said.
The Delta Psi Kappa Awards are usually celebrated with a banquet but the pandemic prevented that plan this year. Nevertheless, the organizers and sponsors refused to let a year go by without honoring Miami-Dade’s best of young female athletes.
