‘When has it [USA] been united,’ says former NFL player and South Florida star

Former NFL player Tyrone Carter, who starred at Pompano Beach Blanche Ely and the University of Minnesota, was interviewed for the premiere episode of ‘60 in 6,’ a new program from long-form news broadcast show, ‘60 minutes,’ that tackles stories in 6-10 minutes.

Carter was interviewed at the Minneapolis memorial to George Floyd, a Black male who died in police custody.

Floyd’s death sparked outrage and protesting across the country.

In a clip posted to the ‘60 minutes’ Facebook page, Carter, who played for four teams in 11 seasons including the Minnesota Vikings, directed questions at reporter Wesley Lowery.

“Tell me what’s our country name,” Carter asked Lowery.

“United States of America,” Lowery said.

That led to a follow-up from Carter.

“Now when has it been united,” Carter asked Lowery.

Carter explained, “You see, I could tell you. I never been united as a black man. Never. We never been. But guess what? Y’all make so much money off us. We were slaves. Yeah, you gotta make a profit, right. But listen, when it’s going to be about, heart, man? Haven’t we already been through enough with this COVID-19? And then all of a sudden, we gotta add it on top of that? Come on, man. Wake up.”

“Let’s just talk about this issue. Police brutality, how many years they been talkin’ about it? ... I wanna have a solution and get rid of this. Have you ever heard or seen this happen in the state of Minnesota, what’s happening right now today?”

A woman standing in the background answered Carter with, ‘No.’
