This golfer with Bradenton ties withdrew from a marquee PGA Tour event due to coronavirus
As professional sports leagues in the United States began suspending their seasons on Thursday, following the NBA’s cue from Wednesday night due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the PGA Tour decided to continue with this week’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, but without any spectators.
C.T. Pan, who trained at IMG Academy in Bradenton before starring for the University of Washington, decided to not play in one of golf’s biggest tournaments.
Pan took to social media to issue a statement on his withdrawal, which stemmed from concerns over the spread of COVID-19.
“I chose to withdraw from THE PLAYERS Championship because my wife and I want to protect ourselves from the risk of exposure to the coronavirus,” Pan wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “We are fine and our families are fine. Our lifestyle is like a circus, traveling from one place to another. We believe this is a time to exercise caution by not playing this week.”
