Foundation steps up to continue Miami-Dade-Broward All-Star football game
Having lost its main sponsor, the annual Dade vs. Broward high school football all-star game, aka 305 versus 954, was in big trouble this year.
In danger of slipping through the cracks and the game not getting played, the folks from Tru Sports Foundation have stepped up and come to the rescue. Having now sponsored the annual Private vs. Public All-Star game, which held its 11th version on past Saturday night, TSF president Mario Smith announced on Friday that his company will underwrite the cost and the Dade-Broward game will get played.
Kickoff is set for Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Milander Stadium in Hialeah.
“Having heard that the game might not be played this year we wanted to take the opportunity to keep a historical game like this alive,” said Smith. who starred at Monsignor Pace in the early ’90s, played for Kansas State in the mid-’90s and professionally in the CFL in the late 90s. “We (TRU Sports Foundation) are all about the advancement of our student-athletes and wanted these kids to have the opportunity to showcase their talent in a game that means a great deal in the South Florida community.”
The Broward roster is set as Fort Lauderdale coach Richard Dunbar will head up the 954s. But the Dade team, which will be coached by Hialeah’s Gary Sanchez, is not set yet. Tryouts are scheduled to begin on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Milander, 4700 Palm Avenue in Hialeah.
Any Dade players wishing to participate will have to register. Any players or coaches interested can contact Smith at 786-285-3699, Kevin Brown at 786-486-7223 or visit www.truprepacademy.com/trusportsfoundation.
