When Christopher Rodriguez learned his grandfather had cancer, he decided fear was not going to overpower him.
Instead, fear inspired him and his childhood friend, Mary Elizabeth Allen, to create a haunted house in Miami Shores — the “Insane Asylum Haunted House” — to raise money for cancer research. In 2014, their first Halloween, they raised $1,300. With support from the Dolphins Cancer Challenge, the following year, they raised $61,000 for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. In 2016, the group raised more than $125,000 through the haunted house and a new event: a Dance-A-Thon at Hard Rock Stadium.
The project, dubbed “Scaring for Caring,” has developed Christopher’s business, communication and leadership skills, which will help him in his goal to become a film director.
