I don’t consider myself to be a master of DIY when it comes to electronics repair, but I’ve been known to dabble a bit, whether it’s opening up a computer to install new upgraded RAM or replacing a battery or broken screen in my iPhone. For jobs like these, a standard screwdriver set just won’t do — you need precision drivers and bits, not to mention specialized tools that can help you open a laptop or phone casing without breaking anything in the process.

Fortunately, iFixit has anticipated the needs of expert (or amateur) tinkerers and has come up with a handy, useful Essential Electronics Toolkit. It’s custom-made for working with computers, game consoles, tablets, phones and any other electronics that use tiny screws and require delicate handling. Read on to learn why it’s become my go-to fix-it kit!

The heart of this kit is a precision screwdriver with a magnetic bit socket that can reach into tiny spaces while still giving you a good grip on the smallest screws thanks to its knurled grip and swivel top. The kit also includes 16 durable steel bits that fit every kind of tiny screw you’ll find on electronic devices, including Philips, flathead and Torx screws.

It’s not just about the driver and bits, though — the kit comes with several types of opening tools, tweezers, a suction handle, a spudger and a jimmy. In short, this iFixit kit gives you everything you need to pry open casings, prod and poke inside a motherboard, remove phone screens and access the innards of the device you’re repairing.

I’m also impressed by how the tool case is organized, with foam inserts for every tool and bit as well as a sorting tray on the underside of the lid that’s ultra-convenient for placing loose screws while you work. The magnetic bits are useful for hanging onto screws after you’ve removed them, or “scooping up” screws if they’ve fallen on the floor or inside a casing. As a bonus, you can visit the iFixit site for step-by-step repair guides that walk you through how to open up hundreds of electronic items, from Samsung phones to Dell laptops.

Amazon users call the iFixit Essential Electronics Toolkit a bargain, given the quality of the tools and bits in the kit, and I have to agree. I recommend it as an essential part of your tool collection, whether you’re fixing your PlayStation 5 or just playing fix-it around the house. And at under $30, it’s a hard deal to beat!
