If you’re serious music aficionados like us, you know that quality portable sound is hard to come by. Sure, wireless speakers are fine in a pinch, but where can you find finely-detailed sound that’s just as crisp and rich as what you’d get from an expensive speaker system at home?

Enter Bose’s latest portable speaker, the SoundLink Max, which just debuted this year. Available on Amazon, the SoundLink Max is an incredible choice for a speaker that gives you the exceptional sound you’d expect from a Bose. Let’s check out what this speaker offers, and how it improves on its predecessors.

At first glance, the SoundLink Max has the same look as its smaller cousin, the SoundLink Flex. This is a good thing. Bose speakers are known for their stylish and durable designs, with shock and rust resistance. The Max also has an IP67 rating, which means it’s waterproof and dustproof, and it includes a convenient two-way USB-C charging port that you can use to charge other devices.

Playing music through the speaker is simple — either connect to it directly using the 3.5-millimeter port, or use its 5.3 Bluetooth connection (an improvement over previous models’ 4.2 connection) to receive music wirelessly from another source. You can also adjust the speaker’s EQ and check on its battery level using Bose’s app on your mobile device.

Of course, the sound is the main selling point with any speaker. And for a portable speaker, Bose creates an impressive stereo experience thanks to an articulated array across the front, improved oomph on bass performance, and additional processing to cut down on distortion at high volume. The result is a well-balanced overall sound compared to other portable speakers, with less compression and “breakup” at higher volumes (and this is one speaker that’s capable of being loud despite its relatively small size).

You can link the SoundLink Max wirelessly with other Bose speakers for true stereo or party mode playback. And with a battery life of 15 hours, this speaker can be the life of any party, even if it’s an all-day affair.

Audiophiles on Amazon are in agreement with us about the Bose SoundLink Max. Reviewers praise the speaker’s “rich, full-bodied sound” and “crystal clear highs, mids and lows,” as well as its easy setup and compact footprint. When it comes to high-quality portable speakers, we just haven’t found anything better than the SoundLink Max.
