Tri-Rail Offers Stress-Free Train Service From Downtown Miami to and From Broward and Palm Beach Counties
Tri-Rail is strengthening its role as a vital transit link in South Florida, with Express and peak-hour service to and from Downtown Miami, increased ridership and new locomotives in production. The system offers an increasingly reliable and affordable option for commuters, with 19 stations spanning the region and year-round service connecting key destinations.
Tri-Rail’s current schedule ensures continued connectivity for Downtown Miami with 26 trains operating on weekdays and 23 trains on weekends.
The weekday Express train departs from the West Palm Beach Station at 6:30 a.m., with strategically limited stops at the Boca Raton Station, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach, and the Metrorail Transfer Station, before arriving at MiamiCentral Station at 8:05 a.m. In the evening, the return Express train departs MiamiCentral at 5:35 p.m., providing commuters with a convenient and expedited journey home.
“Our passengers are at the heart of our system, and we are committed to providing them with a train service that can improve their quality of life,” said Diane Hernandez Del Calvo, SFRTA Interim Executive Director. “We will continue to look at ways to enhance the service to ensure people can get to their desired destinations on time.”
Rider Experience is Key
Riders enjoy daily service every day of the year, free Wi-Fi, mobile app ticketing and train tracking, bike lockers at stations, bike racks onboard and luggage racks for airport connections. Rider discounts are available for seniors, students and employees who work for businesses registered with Tri-Rail’s Employer Discount Program.
Dedicated to providing the best rider experience and maintaining the system’s integrity, Tri-Rail has ordered seven advanced Charger diesel-electric locomotives from Siemens Mobility. With the addition of seven new locomotives, Tri-Rail will enhance its current fleet, introducing equipment designed to enhance the passenger experience with modern features while improving the reliability of daily service. The locomotives are scheduled to enter service in 2029.
Hernandez Del Calvo added, “These new locomotives represent a major step forward in modernizing Tri-Rail’s fleet and strengthening the reliability of our service for the riders who depend on us every day. This investment supports our long-term vision for a safer, more efficient commuter rail system, and positions Tri-Rail for continued growth.”
Ridership Continues to Grow
More and more people rely on the train system. Recently, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) announced that Tri-Rail had surpassed 4.5 million rides in calendar year 2025, establishing a new all-time ridership record. This milestone follows the achievement from Tri-Rail’s fiscal year (from July 2024 through June 2025) that surpassed 4.5 million rides, as well. This underscores the system’s continued role in accommodating a growing number of passengers who rely on the service for regional travel, whether as daily commuters or as seasonal and leisure riders.
“The value of this system speaks for itself and it shows that more than ever we must continue to protect this essential service, which serves as a critical asset for the region,” said Palm Beach County Mayor Marci Woodward, Chair of the SFRTA Governing Board.
Often described by transportation officials as the equivalent of an additional lane on I-95, Tri-Rail has become a cornerstone of mobility in South Florida. The system helps alleviate roadway congestion, connect communities, and support regional economic growth. Serving as the multimodal backbone of the region, Tri-Rail links passengers to a broad network of transportation systems across three counties and dozens of municipalities, anchoring South Florida’s transit infrastructure.
