Baptist Health: This is a defining moment for cancer care in South Florida | Opinion
In South Florida, we understand resilience. Ours is a community shaped by determination, drive and a deep commitment to one another. That’s why moments of true transformation — moments that redefine what is possible for our neighbors, families, friends and future generations — matter so deeply.
Dr. Herbert Wertheim’s $100 million gift to Baptist Health is one of those moments.
This extraordinary act of generosity — the largest in our health system’s history — will forever transform cancer care in our region and far beyond. More importantly, it is an investment in the people of South Florida: in their health, their hope and their future.
In recognition of this transformational contribution, Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute will now be known as Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute. The name change reflects more than gratitude. It represents a shared vision rooted in Dr. Wertheim’s guiding principle: “Excellent Care Always.”
For nearly 10 years, our institute has served as a vital resource for South Florida families facing a cancer diagnosis. Today, it stands as one of Florida’s largest cancer programs and ranks among the top in the nation. But what matters most is the lives we touch every day, right here in our community.
This gift will enable us to expand that impact in ways that are both immediate and meaningful for our patients. It will help us recruit and retain world-class physicians and researchers, ensuring that South Floridians have access to leading-edge expertise without leaving home. It will expand clinical trials and research, bringing new treatment options and breakthroughs directly to our region. And it will strengthen partnerships with institutions like Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, creating more opportunities for students to train, grow and serve the communities they call home.
But perhaps the most powerful aspect of this gift is its focus on prevention. Through the creation of the Herbert Wertheim Center for Cancer Prevention, we will advance efforts in early detection, screening and genomic risk assessment.
This is essential, as too many families still face barriers to care, leading to later diagnoses and worse outcomes. This initiative will help close those gaps and ensure more people receive care at the earliest, most treatable stages of disease. For South Florida, this means fewer families facing cancer alone — and more lives saved.
This investment also comes at a pivotal moment as our cancer institute approaches its 10th anniversary. It is both a celebration of what has been built here in a relatively short time and a bold commitment to what comes next. With this gift, we are accelerating our journey toward becoming not just a regional leader, but a global destination for cancer care, while remaining firmly rooted in serving our local community.
Herbert Wertheim’s generosity reflects a deep belief in South Florida — its people, its potential and its future. It sends a powerful message: that world-class care should not be limited by geography and that our community deserves access to the very best in medicine and innovation.
On behalf of Baptist Health and the patients and families whose lives will be forever changed, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Herbert Wertheim. His gift is more than philanthropic — it is personal, purposeful and profoundly impactful. Together, we are building a healthier South Florida, one where hope is closer to home and where the future of cancer care is shaped right here in our own backyard.
