Miami-Dade superintendent: Why Florida’s future is powered by public schools | Opinion
Every morning, as students arrive at school campuses across Miami-Dade, a vital collaboration begins. This moment represents a shared promise that our community will work hand-in-hand with families to nurture every child’s potential. Together, we ensure our students are ready for a world that is changing faster than ever.
This week, as we join the nation in celebrating Public Schools Week from Feb. 23–27, we are reminded of the immense responsibility we carry. As the third-largest school district in the nation, our true strength lies in the personal connections built in our classrooms. Florida’s future is powered by public schools, and that power is generated by the success of every child, fueled by our collective efforts.
Our commitment to Florida’s future starts at the very beginning of the educational journey, which is why M-DCPS is actively expanding early childhood programs.
Research tells us that most brain development happens before a child ever enters a kindergarten classroom. By opening this window of opportunity earlier, we are closing achievement gaps before they can even form and providing our working families with the high-quality support they deserve. This is an investment that pays dividends for decades, creating a more prosperous and prepared Miami-Dade.
Engine of opportunity
When we say “powered by public schools,” we are describing a proven engine of opportunity. A high school diploma is no longer a standalone credential, nor is it the finish line. At Miami-Dade County Public Schools, our graduates leave us with a diploma plus — including college credit and advanced standing earned through advanced placement, Cambridge AICE and the international baccalaureate; additional college credits through dual enrollment; industry certifications that lead to high-wage careers and paid internship experiences — resulting in an early level resume that prepares them for various career opportunities.
We are powering the future by aligning education with Miami’s economy, expanding academic offerings connected to high-growth sectors such as healthcare, aviation, technology, logistics and finance and by embedding industry-connected learning into the student experience through paid internships and apprenticeships and by leading in innovation — particularly in the responsible use of artificial intelligence — to empower students as active, critical thinkers who use technology not to shortcut learning, but to deepen inquiry, solve complex problems and graduate prepared to meet the world’s most pressing challenges.
We believe that student excellence is built upon a foundation of wellness. In collaboration with our community partners, M-DCPS schools provide a comprehensive network of care that begins with free, year-round medical services — offered in person at our school clinics and virtually — and extends through the support of over 140 mental health coordinators. By addressing these essential needs, we ensure our students remain focused, healthy and ready to learn.
A shared vision
Our schools are the heart of our economy and the soul of our neighborhoods. When our students succeed, Florida prospers. This Public Schools Week, we celebrate that success by inviting you to share your own stories. Tell us about the moments that make you proud and why you continue to choose Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Your experiences are the true pulse of our progress.
Thank you, parents, for choosing us. Thank you, community members, for investing in us. We are more than just a school district; together, we are the architects of what comes next.
Florida’s future is powered by public schools, and that future has never looked brighter.
Jose L. Dotres is superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
