As someone fortunate enough to spend a career exploring the rewarding and diverse world of food, I’ve always believed that the kitchen is more than a place to cook; it’s the heartbeat of a home and a community — a space to learn and create memories and connections.

For the past two decades, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival has embodied those very ideals, serving as a springboard for the students who want to achieve culinary and hospitality excellence.

I’ve been part of the festival since its earliest days and every year, I leave inspired by the incredible talent that converges in South Florida. But as much as the festival is about celebrity chefs, groundbreaking dishes from restaurants coast-to-coast and one-of-a-kind events, its true mission lies in its role as a platform for the next generation of culinary and hospitality leaders.

That’s why I’m especially proud of the work our foundation is doing to amplify the opportunities for students at Florida International University’s (FIU) Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management.

The Rachael Ray Foundation’s new scholarship fund is our way of ensuring that the dreams of aspiring hospitality professionals are not hindered by financial barriers.

FIU students are the lifeblood of the festival, gaining hands-on experience in everything from event planning to kitchen management. They don’t just witness the magic; they help create it. This real-world learning, coupled with the networking opportunities, can and do, transform lives. Just ask Andrew Kaplan.

Andrew, or “Kappy” as he’s affectionately known, is an FIU Hospitality alum whose story underscores the power of these experiences. As a student, he volunteered at the festival, where he hustled, networked and made an impression. That’s where our paths first crossed.

His dedication and passion stood out and soon after, he moved to New York and joined my team, eventually becoming a vital part of the Rachael Ray brand and my philanthropy work.

Today, Kappy’s journey from FIU student to EVP of culinary operations for our brand and director of our cooking and kids philanthropy is a testament to what happens when talent meets opportunity.

This is just one of many stories that highlight how the partnership between the festival and FIU is more than an academic exercise; it’s a catalyst for careers. In a city like Miami, where food, culture and innovation intersect, fostering talent isn’t just good for individuals; it’s essential for the region’s continued growth as a global hub for hospitality and tourism.

Miami is a city built on the dreams and determination of people from all walks of life. Its culinary scene reflects its diversity, boldness, and openness to reinvention. By investing in education and mentorship, we’re not only empowering students to chase their ambitions but also enriching the cultural and economic fabric of this community.

The Rachael Ray Foundation’s commitment to FIU’s Chaplin School is just the beginning. I’m excited to see what the future holds as we continue to support the students who make festival possible. Whether they go on to become executive chefs, restaurateurs or hospitality innovators, these young people are the ones who will shape the next chapter for Miami’s culinary and hospitality story.

So, as we gather once again for this year’s festival, let’s savor every bite and toast to the creativity that makes it all possible. But let’s also remember that the real magic happens behind the scenes — in the classrooms, kitchens and countless hours of preparation that turn dreams into reality.

It’s an honor to play a small part in that journey, and I can’t wait to see what the next generation cooks up.

The South Beach Wine & Food Festival runs from Feb. 20-23 in Miami Beach. For more information, go to sobewff.org. Ray will be among the chefs who will be appearing at the event.
