Last week’s election left Miami-Dade’s Democrats with profound disappointment and deep concern as we watched our county, which has long been a stronghold of Democratic values, take a shift. Underscored by a historic victory for President Donald Trump and the success of most Republican candidates down ballot, this outcome serves as a mandate for Democrats. Our diverse community has spoken, and it’s imperative that we listen closely and respond thoughtfully to deliver progress and results.

This moment is a call to action. With hard work and commitment, Miami-Dade Democrats can rebuild on a foundation rooted in values that unite us: freedom, opportunity and the belief that the American dream should be within reach for every family. While losses are tough, they offer an opportunity to reignite our commitment to meeting the needs of residents throughout the county.

Our path forward lies in connecting deeply with Miami-Dade residents. As a social worker, public interest lawyer and lifelong community advocate, I believe we must address the issues that matter most: economic realities, personal freedoms and safety. Miami-Dade has always been a place of resilience where people from all backgrounds come to find freedom and build better lives. Our message must reflect these priorities, grounded in core Democratic values but spoken in a way that resonates with the daily concerns of our residents.

My own decisive re-election this August — fueled by a broad coalition of Democratic, independent and even Republican voters in traditionally conservative areas like Hialeah — demonstrates that strong leadership based on vision, integrity and proven results resonates with our community.

As mayor, I’ve seen the power of investing in our communities, from delivering historically low tax rates and boosting small businesses, to enhancing public safety, expanding education pathways and championing climate resilience projects. Under Democratic leadership, Miami-Dade is thriving because we’ve focused on innovative solutions that elevate our economy and quality of life. Our party must reflect this commitment to addressing residents’ needs.

Rebuilding the party means re-engaging at the grassroots level. From the DNC to the FDP and locally, Democrats must bolster registration and engagement, building a coalition rooted in shared values. Over the past year, my campaign opened field offices countywide — from Little Havana to Liberty City and Homestead to Miami Beach — with a focus on creating a meaningful presence and shared organizing spaces to support down-ballot Democrats. We must continue these people-powered investments, showing up for residents, listening to their concerns and fighting for solutions.

Despite the losses, our Democratic values endure in Miami-Dade. We are the party of freedom and opportunity, fighting for the right to make personal decisions without government interference, to work toward economic prosperity, and to build a secure future. These values resonate across demographics and are foundational to our success moving forward. To regain voters’ trust, we must lead with heart. The challenges we face — economic uncertainty, divisive policies and threats to essential freedoms — demand a Democratic Party focused on solutions, grounded in compassion and leaving no one behind.

Regaining lost ground won’t be easy. We must courageously re-evaluate our strategies, strengthen outreach and rededicate ourselves to building a stronger, more unified Democratic Miami-Dade. But I am confident we can meet this moment.

Voters want leaders who deliver on promises and embody principles of independence, integrity and respect. This has guided my work as mayor, and it will continue to do so throughout my second term. Our duty is to see the other side as the loyal opposition, finding common ground where possible and holding them accountable when needed. I trust Party leaders will embrace this as well, as our future depends on it.

In times like these, when election results are deeply painful and don’t go the way we hoped, our love for democracy remains steadfast. This very process allows us to continue striving for a better future. It’s time to move forward with renewed determination to build a resilient Democratic Party, ready to make a difference.
