Strategic growth, sustained success key to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami — and its ‘Littles’ | Opinion
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami (BBBS Miami) is a beacon of hope for our youth, dedicated to unlocking each child’s potential. As our organization grows in tandem with the city’s development, let’s reflect on our journey and key achievements.
Our holistic approach, called the “BIG 5,” encompasses academic enrichment, career pathways, digital literacy, health and wellness, and music and the arts. These pillars underpin our unwavering commitment to enduring advancement.
BBBS Miami’s 46,000 square-foot Carnival Center for Excellence exemplifies our commitment to academic enrichment, training and vocational programs. This center reflects our ongoing relevance, as we provide practical training for the future, giving youth skills that seamlessly translate into real-world opportunities.
From our vibrant barbershop training and partnership with The Spot Barber Academy to engaging artistic programs through the Wynwood Walls Foundation with an art studio and breathtaking murals gracing our headquarters, BBBS Miami is redefining youth development.
We take pride in being home to the first-ever Best Buy Teen Tech Center™ within Big Brothers Big Sisters. This marks a pioneering leap into tech education. Here, we not only nurture our “Littles” but prepare them for the digital era. Our approach transcends basic computer literacy; it’s about nurturing digital literacy that extends to entrepreneurship.
While college has been the traditional path to success, we now offer vocational tracks under our Big Five framework, opening alternative career pathways for “Littles.”
Our youth explore a world of opportunities, including fashion, thanks to our partnership with Macy’s. It’s more than a shopping spree; it’s about understanding the professional world of retail, engaging with associates and customers and telling stories that inspire.
We’re going a step further, with a “Big” and “Little” selected to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2023 in New York City. They will meet Macy’s executives and join the Macy’s float.
Our mentorship approach extends beyond career and academics. We address pressing mental health issues, partnering with Udonis Haslem of the Miami Heat and the Udonis Haslem Foundation, Mindful Kids Miami, Florida Blue and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to tackle loneliness and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). In today’s post-pandemic world, ACEs are a harsh reality; mentoring is one of its strongest mitigating forces
We are preparing local youth for tech-driven opportunities, thanks to partners like Career Source South Florida. Our dedicated Best Buy Teen Tech Center, with full-time staff, will support our “Littles” as they explore cutting-edge technology, including tools for photography, augmented and virtual reality and 3-D design.
Our leadership is exemplified by four Pinnacle Awards, even during the pandemic. Our substantial contribution to food distribution during those trying times underscores our ongoing commitment.
Expanding into the Florida Keys, we serve more than 500 high-risk students, enhancing academic and job prospects. We actively engage with the local community, partner with various organizations and forge connections with law enforcement to prepare children and teens for successful futures. This will leverage our strengths to enhance academic performance and job prospects, while actively engaging with the local community.
To ensure our mentorship reflects the diverse cultural tapestry of South Florida, BBBS Miami is committed to the intentional recruitment of Black men, in partnership with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and other Greek letter organizations.
Education means empowerment. Our youth learn trades like barbering, achieving success in college. Digital literacy expands beyond computers, building a portfolio of success.
Our programs focus on both soft and hard skills, fostering confident individuals who give back to their communities.
Our growth is always purposeful. The growth into the Florida Keys isn’t mere expansion; it’s addressing specific community needs thoughtfully and with the clear intent to uplift the youth of South Florida and the Keys.
We’re committed to sustaining and expanding our impact, with the generosity of donors, board members, community partners and volunteers enabling us to offer comprehensive youth support.
Whether it’s with your time, your talent or your treasure, we invite you to be a part of this narrative. With your support, we can continue to make a profound impact on the lives of our community’s youth, empowering them to create a brighter future.
