Puerto Rican gold
Congratulations to Miami resident and Puerto Rican-born Monica Puig for her historic accomplishment winning the Olympic gold medal in women’s tennis for Puerto Rico.
Not only did she defeat three grand slam champions in her gold-medal run, she became the first female athlete from Puerto Rico to win a medal of any kind and it was also the first gold medal ever for Puerto Rico.
Puig has lived and trained in Miami for a long time. Her confidence in her ability at a young age to become a big time player in tennis has now been justified. She’s only 22, so her future is bright.
The dominance of American athletes at the Olympics is, of course, a big story, but hopefully, Puig’s huge accomplishment representing Puerto Rico will receive the recognition it deserves.
