Insurance scofflaws

It bothers me that as a law-abiding citizen I have automobile insurance on all of my vehicles, as required by state law.

My son was involved in a car accident more than a year ago. The other party was responsible for causing more than $20,000 worth of damage to my son’s vehicle.

The person had no driver’s license, insurance or money and left the scene of the accident. He was apprehended and got off by paying a small fine in court.

My insurance company paid for the damages, but my son ended up paying a $1,000 deductible, in addition to time lost from work, paying for a rental vehicle for the two months that took to fix his car and lease payments for a car that he couldn’t drive.

It bothers me that I’m the one paying for an accident that was not my fault, and my insurance premium keeps going up because there are so many uninsured motorists in Miami-Dade County, a lot of them without licenses who are getting away with small or no penalties.
