Re the June 17 editorial, New day, new shelter for county animals: Is it a coincidence that in a mayoral election year a desperately needed animal shelter finally opens its doors after 12 long years in the making?
Noticeably, the editorial suggests that we should “praise” Mayor Carlos Gimenez for shepherding this dream into reality. Simply packing up decades of existing problems and moving them down the street is nothing to praise or celebrate.
Whimsical dog and cat silhouettes adorning a new building do not change the fact that Miami-Dade Animal Services is still a death camp and will continue to euthanize thousands of dogs and cats.
Until we set forth real solutions to stop the unwanted pet population we will simply continue to chase our tails. The Pets’ Trust is the solution we need to put an end to this archaic practice — along with voting in new leaders this August.
