Plan B

Re Francis Mahoney’s June 16 letter on birth control: The morning-after pill, Plan B, will not cause a woman to have an abortion. Plan B is a progestin only emergency contraceptive. It contains levonorgestrel, which has been a component of birth-control pills for decades. It works primarily by preventing the release of the egg from the ovary. It may also work by 1) preventing fertilization of the egg and 2) altering the lining of the womb, which may decrease the chances of implantation.

This is essentially how all hormonal contraceptives work to prevent pregnancy and, hopefully, the need to have an abortion. It is unconscionable to spread falsehoods to promote one’s religious or political agenda. It is important to teach our young people responsibility and to provide facts and not fiction of how their bodies work and how best to prevent pregnancy.
