Congress must act on guns

Another mass murder. Another moment of silence by members of Congress.

Silence, but no action by these lawmakers who protect guns over people.

I commend Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes, who walked off the House floor telling his colleagues to take action instead of making a show of their moments of silence.

Civilians do not need military-grade weapons to protect themselves. They should not be in the hands of civilians.

Most of the generals in our armed forces agree with this. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world have had moments of silence for the horrific attack in Orlando.

Instead of feigned compassion, it’s time for Congress to be accountable. It’s time for Congress to act.

Joan Siemianowski,
