Re Frank Calzon’s Jan. 20 Other Views column, Talk to Cuba’s democracy advocates: I’m an American of Cuban descent who was in Cuba when the announcement of renewed diplomatic ties between both nations was made. I remained on the island for several weeks after.
I would like to assure Calzon that the many Cubans I spoke with were quite enthusiastic about the unexpected policy change, and none mentioned any similarity between this historic event and the 1898 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish-American War of 1895.
The secret negotiations that have taken place to reach this point pale in comparison to the secret negotiations President Nixon conducted with communist China. If our policy of isolating Cuba for 57 years didn’t work, maybe this new one will.
