Where’s compassion?
Mitchell Haness’ May 22 letter regarding U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and her husband as they confront the issue of their transgender child was cynical.
He says that he doesn’t agree with Ros-Lehtinen’s conservative Republican politics. So the implication is that his politics are liberal. On one hand, he seems to admire the family’s “struggle toward acceptance” of their offspring as “any loving family” would. But he distrusts the parents’ acceptance by wondering how they would have reacted had this “struggle” not affected their family personally.
Partisan politics replace compassion: Republicans can only be loving and accepting of transgenders if it affects them directly at home. It seems Ros-Lehtinen and her family can’t win for losing.
