Veto alimony bill

The break-up of a marriage and family is a painful tragedy. The family feels the effects of divorce for a lifetime, but there is also a ripple effect throughout our communities, state and nation. That’s why Gov. Scott should veto SB 668 immediately.

SB 668 weakens incentives for families to stay together by taking discretion for setting alimony payments away from judges and replacing it with a formula. Scott’s veto of this bill might not keep any families from breaking up, but it would send the message that Florida will not make it any easier.

Our laws should reflect the fact that strong families make strong communities. I hope Gov. Scott will consider that as he decides what to do with SB 668, and I hope he will decide to veto it.
