Thank you for the April 12 article Florida backtracks on new guidelines for rights of LGBT foster children. Just as I thought our state was moving forward, it takes a step back.
How dare the Department of Children & Families bow to the wishes of misinformed religious groups?
As a Guardian ad Litem, I am aware of how our state is failing many of the children in its care. We work diligently to see that these children are safe and that their needs are met. As the adoptive mother of a gay child, I am personally aware of the challenges these children face in our society.
How can we protect LGBT children when the agency mandated to protect them fails to do so? How can we teach non-LGBT children to accept others as they are when their caregivers don’t?

We are failing all children. We are not effectively giving support to those who need it or providing positive role models for those in foster homes or shelters. The discrimination and ignorance have to stop.
