I concur with the cries of South Dade residents for light rail over expanded busing. Years ago, I was baffled when Miami-Dade County removed the existing Florida East Coast Railway tracks along South Dixie Highway in favor of a bus lane. It would’ve been so easy to create a commuter rail from Dadeland to Florida City.
Additionally if the FEC corridor now being prepared as Ludlum Trail and the CSX line around the south end of Miami International Airport had been utilized, Tri-Rail could have made a direct link from its main line all the way down to Dadeland and, ultimately, Florida City.
Now there are two options. Convert the existing bus lane to rail or, as has been suggested, take over the CSX Homestead Branch and expand Tri-Rail to Homestead/Florida City. If that doesn’t work how about reconfiguring the South Dixie Highway/Busway corridor into an extension of the Palmetto Expressway? Either way, the growth of South Miami-Dade dictates action.
