Letters to the Editor

Open arms to others

Sara Rosado’s March 29 letter, New refugees make us vulnerable, mischaracterizes the Obama administration’s policies.

We should not be afraid of refugees. There is a process for immigrants to apply for political asylum. In fact, the Obama administration has been too harsh in its immigration policies.

For example, since 2009 more than 2 million immigrants have been deported, and the majority of them for nonviolent crimes, including traffic violations.

I feel so fortunate to live in a city like Miami that embraces immigrants and refugees from all over the world. How great to talk to my neighbors in Miami Beach from Italy, Mexico, India, and Brazil.

How great to drive down Calle Ocho and remember how so many Cuban immigrants came to our country for freedom.

When people are afraid, they fear “the other,” blame their problems on the other and close doors rather than open them. Let’s not be afraid.

Let’s show the world that we are a strong nation of immigrants and their children.

Glenn Hutchinson,

Miami Beach
