Forget the past
In his speech to the Cuban nation last week, President Obama said something very profound that has not been quoted, but which I think is worth repeating.
In explaining why he is moving ahead with seeking a new relationship with Cuba he said: “I am aware of the history between our countries, but I am not trapped in it.”
There are many people in this country who are “trapped” in history.
They are trapped not just by Cuba-United States history, but also by world history and U.S. Civil War history, for example. The past should be the prologue to the future, not a cage that prevents new beginnings.
