Letter writer Retha Sally Fye makes some good points on the important subject of biliteracy. What she’s missing though is the real solution.
It is unconscionable for any student in South Florida to not have access to Spanish language courses. As everyone knows, it is, and has been, required for employment success here for many years. Although we are all “gringos,” my wife and two grown children speak fluent Spanish.
Parents of African American students should request, nay demand, that appropriate resources be provided to this end. Failing this, they should consider moving to Kansas or Vermont.
