Local businessman Mike Fernandez says in his March 20 opinion column, Cuba’s dark past should not block its brighter future, that “many things have changed in Cuba.”
What has changed is that there are a few Cuban-American businessmen more interested in making a buck than in human rights on the island.
He states that “change will be slow,” but says nothing about increased repression and beatings of dissidents reported by Amnesty International, Freedom House and Human Rights Watch after Obama’s Cuba announcement.
Fernandez blames the United States for the darkness the Cubans suffered due to the Cold War, but the nature of police states is to destroy, abuse, imprison, and murder.
