Review causes delays

The March 17 article Obtaining police emails can take months, cost thousands accurately pointed out that obtaining police emails sometimes takes a considerable amount of time and, depending on the range of the search, the costs involved can be quite expensive.

What the article failed to mention is that the primary reason for the delay and costs involved can often be attributed to the fact that prior to releasing emails to the public they have to be read and, if necessary, redacted to ensure that they do not contain information that may compromise a criminal investigation, as required by Chapter 119 of the Florida statutes.
