My wife and I voted early on Sunday only to find out that we had been switched from the Republican Party to NPA when we changed our address/driver’s license through the DMV.
The local worker contacted a Broward County elections supervisor, who showed us the record in the computer.
We were upset that we could not vote in the primary election. As we have always voted Republican, it never occurred to us to check if that was still our party affiliation or not.
I came across a Herald article from November saying that there was a growing number of NPAs, particularly from South Florida, which makes me wonder how much of that is caused by the DMV. At the voting site, we were told that this happens all the time. It’s also disappointing that as NPAs we never received notification in the mail about the deadline to affiliate with a party. This warrants an investigation.
