Insurance pool

Kudos to Florida’s Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera for his recent opinion piece, Protecting Floridians’ American Dream, that called for the Legislature to curb abusive contractor and home insurance practices such as “assignment of benefits,” which have driven our homeowner property insurance costs in Florida up.

We have been essentially hurricane free for 10 years, but our rates keep climbing disproportionately. Meanwhile, the deadliest and most expensive natural disasters in the United States in the past decade have been snow storms, wild fires, floods tornadoes and blizzards, none in Florida, I might add.

Isn’t shared risk with reasonable differences what insurance is all about?
