I have been a Miami Beach resident for 12 years, and live in the Collins Park neighborhood, directly east of the Convention Center. In December, much-needed renovations to the aging center began, which will help revamp this economic engine. In March, residents will have the opportunity to further improve the Convention Center by voting for a new, privately funded hotel that will be connected to the renovated meeting hall.
The hotel will help attract high-profile national and international events to our hometown and will cut down on the number of car-dependent local trade shows that clog our streets. The hotel will also provide jobs and massive tax and lease payments, which will pay for needed neighborhood improvements. Most important, it won’t cost taxpayers a cent.
I’m very much in favor of Portman Miami Beach LLC doing the job. I’m voting Yes on March 15.
