What a surprise when we responded to a loud knock on our back door on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
There stood Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman. She was there to evacuate us after a tornado hit the Sky Lake area earlier that day. She heard, while she was canvassing the area assessing the damage, that I was recovering from major surgery and that my aide couldn’t get into our house and we had no electricity.
The storm toppled two huge olive trees onto two cars, making access to our front door impossible. Heyman immediately called authorities and had a path cleared so we could leave our home and seek shelter elsewhere.
Heyman should be recognized for her act of compassion and her continued concern for the people of our community.
