Illegal immigration
Re Andres Oppenheimer’s Jan. 31 column, The pope’s chance to expose Trump: He states that the “world’s richest countries” use the “immigration issue as a demagogic tool to frighten people.” This, of course, is wrong.
The United States allows in about a million immigrants a year. Illegal immigration, on the other hand, is a federal crime. Because outlaws break into our country, it is an enormous national issue.
Then there’s the tired tale that, currently, more Mexicans are moving back home than coming in illegally. However, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency reports that more than 100,000 minors from all over Central America were dropped were dropped off in the United States. That’s no problem, right?
Unless Oppenheimer plans to raise all those kids with the salary he earns, I suggest he at least learn to respect American laws.
