Refocus at UM
I am proud of my University of Miami degree (from 1970), but the overemphasis on its football team diminishes the value of my diploma. Julio Frenk has just been inaugurated as UM’s new president. He was Mexico’s health minister and most recently dean of the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard.
New scientific information has highlighted the health risks that football players experience. I hope Frenk will work hard to undo the damage done when it comes to the Hurricanes. He has a moral and ethical responsibility to protect the players as well as the reputation of the university.
I hope that he will not fail in this important responsibility.
