State of the county in Creole

Mayor Carlos Gimenez delivered the State of the County address in both English and Spanish.

Even though only a minority of Miami-Dade’s population is Haitian, they still might have appreciated it if the mayor had reached out to them and also spoken Creole.

It is both unfortunate and ironic that Jean Monestime, the first elected Haitian on the Miami-Dade Commission and also the current chairman, did not use his considerable influence in making this happen.

I believe that both Mayor Gimenez and Commission Chairman Monestime owe the Haitian community in Miami-Dade County an apology for this important oversight.

Kenneth Karger,

Miami
