SunPass gouging

I recently visited relatives in the Florida Keys. I rented a car from Dollar Rent A Car and was asked if I wanted to purchase a SunPass for $50. I declined as I was not going to be driving in Miami, only from and to the airport. I have been told you can buy them anywhere for $5.

The first bill arrived with tolls of $5.27 and administrative fee of $75. A second bill arrived on Jan. 5 to be paid by Jan. 7. The tolls were $3.27 and the administrative fee was $60.

Four items on the second bill were on the first bill. The car rental agency didn’t even know about the first bill. Who’s scamming the public — car rental companies or the state of Florida, which I’m almost sure gets a cut. of this pie. Are people too busy to even think about what the charges are or going to be?

Be aware, Florida tourists who rent cars: If you don’t get the SunPass, you are going to be gouged.
