DCF probe needed

Re the Dec. 16 story Florida DCF to review death of 15-month-old boy in Manatee: Child-abuse injuries sometimes can be consistent with those of a fall, which is likely with a toddler. That said, such falls are usually not from a great height and would not be consistent with the injuries that occur.

As a former coroner’s investigator, as well as having a background as an Oxnard Police Department Crime Scene investigator, I have attended and documented well over a hundred autopsies.

Cases such as 15-month-old Knowellan Kelly, where there are questions as to whether a death is accidental or a crime, begs for investigation by law enforcement rather than by agency personnel.

If Florida’s laws don’t provide for this, then they should be changed.

Leo G. Alvarez,

Oxnard, Calif.
