Gun control

Re the Dec. 14 opinion piece Please convince me that gun control will work: While I appreciate Cynthia M. Allen’s candor and honesty, I believe that some form of gun control is necessary lest our country slide back into the lawless days of the Wild West.

She writes that a study concluded that a ban on assault weapons would have negligible effects, perhaps too small to measure.

Well, if her relatives or friends were killed by such a widely available weapon, then I can assure you that she would be able to measure the effects.

As far as I’m concerned, anyone can own the single-shot flintlock style guns and rifles that were produced during the times our Constitution was written. Anything else needs to be licensed and insured as we do with our automobiles. Criminal and mental-health background checks are a must and absolutely, positively no military style equipment should be available for purchase by the general public.
