Cops with cameras

I support and commend Dade County Police Benevolent Association President John Rivera and his insightful Jan. 2 Opinion piece, Forget the cameras — invest in our people.

His is the first realistic analysis of this national demonstration against the police. John is a veteran of South Florida law enforcement and, along with many of us, has been at ground-level during many of our own civil disturbances. I don't necessarily agree that 25 years of community policing have shown much success at improving community relationships.

When the response to any of the armed confrontations between police and offenders immediately demonizes law enforcement, it becomes clear that the extraordinary efforts of community policing and community outreach have not yet succeeded. That failure, certainly, does not lie solely at the feet of law enforcement.
