In December 2013, I made some important resolutions for 2014, including making a difference in the lives of children. In June, I became a certified Guardian ad Litem, dove in and took three cases in Broward County. One of these cases has since successfully been closed out of the system, and the children were reunited with their rehabilitated parents.
In August, I became employed in the Miami-Dade GAL Program as a volunteer recruiter. I knew that being a recruiter would allow me to grow in areas of public speaking and networking, but I was even more excited at the prospect of finding like-minded people who just wanted to help the vulnerable population of foster-care children.
As both a volunteer and staff member, I know how crucial it is for our community to get involved. With a GAL by their side, kids spend less time in care, receive appropriate services and are less likely to languish in care. I urge those interested to reach out — call (786) 469-3813 or visit www.weareguardians.org.
