Quality soldiers

I read Bob Troy’s Nov. 18 letter, Reinstate the draft, and I have to disagree with him.

The Nixon administration abolished the draft. A good move, politically, but not common sense wise. I enlisted in the Army in 1963, and was a company clerk for three years.

One of my assignments was at Fort Detrick, Md., where the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Unit is stationed. There, we had PFC’s with masters degrees, putting germs into bombs. Where are you going to get that quality of soldier in a volunteer army?

The next war could be a very technical war, and where are you going to get qualified soldiers to participate in it?

Don R. Stevens,

Hialeah
