Significant tragedy

Joseph Stalin is reputed to have said that one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.

In this context, Christine M. Flowers’ assertion in her Nov. 2 column, Where political discourse goes to die, that “the incidence of abortions triggered by rape is statistically insignificant” is fatuous. To a woman who undergoes an abortion as a result of becoming pregnant by rape, these outrages to her body are anything but “insignificant.”
