Hats off to Willie Logan of the Opa-locka CDC and the city of Opa-locka for their successful grand opening of the Art of Transformation. The comment heard most often was: “Can you believe we’re in Opa-locka?!” The entities that provided the path for this to happen, such as the Knight Foundation, the Surdna Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, should be proud. Many knew this would be a smashing success, and those who thought less were taken aback as we stood under the stars, sipped, noshed, networked and viewed work by amazing artists.
The show, up until Dec. 15, was not only about the art of transformation, but also the art of transforming mindsets. With a Tri-Rail stop at the Arts and Recreation Center, I trust that those coming for Art Basel can find their way to this magic part of town.
