A recent Miami City Commission meeting was an important turning point for the long-neglected Miami Marine Stadium. For the first time, there was unanimous agreement among the commissioners that the stadium must be saved.
While they rejected the only proposal to date to privately fund the stadium’s rehabilitation, they all embraced the idea of bringing the stadium back to life. This new enthusiasm is an exciting development.
When the Friends of Miami Marine Stadium first undertook its mission to save the stadium several years ago, there was considerable resistance to our efforts. In the last two years, the Friends has rallied support for the stadium with incredible results. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the World Monuments Fund, Gloria Estefan and scores of local residents have joined in the fight. The public is galvanized, and City Hall got the message.
With the strong and enthusiastic support of the commission, the future has never looked better for the Miami Marine Stadium.
