As an African American, I was extremely disappointed when I learned of Circuit Court Judge Terry Lewis’ ruling regarding the redrawing of Florida’s 24th Congressional District.
U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson’s Oct. 15 opinion column, Don’t strip district of economic engines that help sustain it, expresses my sentiments exactly.
Her statement clearly points out the negative economic impact of Judge Lewis’ recommendation of the CP-1 map.
In addition, the recommendation also pours salt into the open wounds of chronic minority disenfranchisement.
The CP-1 map removes PortMiami and all major economic assets from within the boundaries of District 24. Just like the Dred Scott decision of 1857, this is yet another example of the courts using the law to justify blatant disrespect of our human dignity. It’s been more than 150 years and we are still not treated as citizens.
