Native tongue

Re the Oct. 5 letter How America works: The contention that American multiculturalism is being hurt by many immigrants' failure to learn our language and culture was of concern. Does the writer really expect us to learn Mikasuki, the language of the native American Miccosukees, or Muscogee (Creek) the language of the native American Seminole?

Perhaps he was referring to Spanish, the first permanent European language spoken in America in 1513 brought to Florida by Ponce de Leon.
