What is a Hispanic?

Re the Sept. 29 Tropical Life article Alzheimer’s in Hispanics: My doctor is from Peru, he speaks Spanish, but his DNA is purely Japanese.

A few years ago, I worked with a Panamanian whose grandparents were from China. My friend Lizbet is from Roatan, Honduras and she is 100 percent of African descent. My cousin in Caracas is of German/French descent by way of Trinidad. A friend’s father in Chile worked for a textile company owned by Maronite Christians from Lebanon. On a trip to southern Chile I met a local couple whose grandparents were from Croatia.

So my question is, What is a Hispanic? And how can one purport to be studying their unique characteristics?
