Cost of body cams
I read the Sept. 28 article Grants boost funding for Dade police, about how lucky we are that the Miami-Dade and Miami Beach police departments are going to receive a total of $1 million for 500 body cameras.
I think this is great, and that it would be a useful tool for officers. However, I am bothered by the fact that each camera costs $2,000. I have done some research and found police-grade body cameras that range between $200 to $500.
Which politician is getting a kickback? They could easily purchase the $500 body cams, so that 2,000 officers would be properly equipped. I would like to know what the difference is — if there is any — between a $500 and a $2,000 camera? This is something that should be looked into.
